Mel Starr is an ordinary thirteen-year-old, but extraordinary things happen to her. Her school's headmaster has gone missing. Petula Zingle, his replacement, emits dark vibes that only Mel senses. To her dismay, she accidentally turns her dorm room a pulsating tangerine. On the plus side, she finds she can converse with animals, with interesting results.
Finally, her great aunt reveals that Mel’s family is filled with magic-makers, but it's not all fun and games. Mel's school is a hot spot for evil magic. Mel discovers that Zingle, aided by Romanian cyborgs, is holding the missing Prof on Wolf Island, the very spot where Wolfram the Wicked made his last earthly appearance.
There, Mel goes head to head in a magical stand-off with Zingle who manages to summon Wolfram. He begins to duel to the finish with Mel.
The story centers around Mel's adventures, but it is her growing relationship with the other three members of the Band of Four that brings her success. These friends, one old and two new, provide the foundation of strength and humor that help her face the many new challenges.
