Okay, so, yes, I realize the original edition of "Masques" was flawed. The the writing was uneven, the transitions choppy, the larger events that drive the story were barely touched on, and there were some truly corney elements (not the least of which is the title--I guess they can't fix everything). Also, the cover was embarrassingly reminiscent of an 80s hairband album.

But I loved it. It was funny, it was romantic, it was melodramatic, it poked fun at itself. The single-minded focus on the relationship between the two main characters was perhaps both the greatest weakness and the greatest charm of what I'll now refer to as MasquesBeta.

Almost twice as long, the new Masques raises the stakes, fills in the gaps, eases the transitions, evens out the language, and clarifies the motivations of the side characters. What was stated as fact is now illustrated and described. What as implied is now made explicit. The result is a stronger book--but one that lacks the particular tumbling enthusiasm and unselfconscious obsessiveness of the original.

What hasn't changed are the characters. Aralorn has always stood out in my mind as the most memorable of Brigg's trademark tough-but-vulnerable female leads. Aralorn is a storyteller, a humorist, and a lover of information. She is independent, happy-go-lucky and self contained--although the traumatic events of the novel threaten to change that. The male lead, Wolf, meanwhile, remains the king of pathos, with a wry sarcastic bent. It's easy to see in these two characters and in the story itself, the influences of generic popular fantasy on a young author, but the germs of the characteristics, fantasies and themes that populate all Brigg's later work are equally apparent.

Too conclude, it good, it's different, it's worth checking out, and I'm excited (like way excited) for the sequel. But I still love the real Masques best.

For a first book, it surpasses even some seasoned authors. It lacks polish and some of the themes are TOLD to you rather than demonstrated, but it brings to life quite an intriguing tortured soul in Wolf. She does better with mysteries later in her Alpha nd Omega series, as the Sianim books don't have much depth of intrigue.
However I still enjoyed the telling, and isn't that the point of a good story.
Finally got around to reading this series. I’ve read Patricia Briggs main two series more than once and never read her first.
Characters are very vivid and I came to especially care for the main couple. It pained me that they didn’t finish the job but I’m really looking forward to the next book.
I am a big fan of Patricia Briggs so I decided to purchase the first book she ever wrote. In the beginning she explains that she was not as experienced when she wrote this and basically apologizes if it was not enjoyable. With that being said the book took longer then expected for me to read, it was a very slow start and I had a hard time getting into it as much as I did with her other books. But since I really like Patricia Briggs and her writing style I felt that reading part of it and leaving a review would be unfair. Eventually I started reading it again and am glad that I did. About half way through the book it started to get interesting and more enjoyable. I liked the banter between Wolf and Aralorn, it was sweet, sarcastic and entertaining. I feel that Patty was a bit hard on herself and any avid fan can learn to appreciate anything written by her, even if it is not what one is use to. Overall I am glad that I was able to read her first book, it shows just how much she has improved and makes me love her other books even more. I gave it 3 stars because it definitely does not compare to her other books, though it was enjoyable, it was definitely not my favorite. If you chose this book as the first book of Patricia Briggs to read and did not enjoy it, please do not give up, I promise she is quite amazing and has a way of making you fall in love with her characters.
This was both good and... Not. Such a great plot line, unique characters (I loved the Old Man of the Mountain twist), and new creatures, BUT the writing was clearly immature. It was disjointed. I love love love Patricia Briggs, and knowing this was her first book, I'm extremely impressed. Phenomenal for a first. In the interest of complete honesty, however, I'd say, if you're a fan of hers already, you probably won't be disappointed. If you're trying her on for the first time, I recommend finding one of her more polished books first, THEN return to this. All that being said, I look forward to the next book in the series. I hope to see an improvement in writing. It will be fun to watch her grow!
This is a reworked version of Patricia Briggs' first novel. I thoroughly enjoyed it. Although I like all her books, Briggs' writing has strengthened over the years. This feels like a newer book. The characters (including secondaries) are sympathetic, interesting and well-developed, the plot exciting and well put together. The take on Magic is interesting there are two forms, human and wild, and they operate differently. Less grim than the Mercy Thompson series, the heroes, Aralorn and Wolf, seem to have more flexibility and make decisions with more agency and less teeth gritted desperation. I liked that. No matter how heroic and admirable, surviving constant trauma involves shutting down the part of the brain that makes us human and creative. It pleased me that Aralorn is a storyteller as well as a mercenary. If you like Patricia Briggs (or well-written fantasy in general), you will like this one. As always, the banter and some of the images are funny; the female lead is strong, feisty, capable, ethical, generous and knows herself well; the male lead is powerful, smart and protective, but with a lot more complexity than the "alpha" of the week, the evil is ugly and true to life, and the themes of fantasy are seen from a quirky enough angle to make them new and engaging. Enjoy!
